Y-40 Deep Joy - Italy
This week Andy and myself headed out to Italy to dive this brand new facility. That new infact, we are the the first UK divers to dive the pool!
This pool has a 42m deep main shaft. Levels at 15, 12, 10, 6, 5 and 1m. There are caves and tunnels all nicely presented in this very unique facility.
here are some pictures taken from our video of us diving
more stuff to follow....

Finally here is a random selection of pics Venice.
Y 40 and everyone involved have certainly put a great deal of thought into this new facility. Making it the worlds deepest swimming pool at 42M. The environment around as well the deep shaft also provides an excellent facility to teach and learn about other aspects of diving. All in All an excellent facility and I would like to extend our thanks to the team there for the hospitality and Sir Smudge for planning an excellent few days in Venice and Y40.

Question:
Leaving aside the extra depth how was it better than Nemo?

Having dived neither of these I'd imagine the new place wins on additional attractions I.e the tunnels etc

Nemo vs Y-40
At the end of the day these are both just pools. But they do both have many different features.
Nemo is a very busy centre, quite small and only 34m deep. We only see a ferry and motoraway. Timings to get the two dives in are very tight.
Y-40 is is deeper, over 8m deeper! it has more levels and it does have realistic simulation caves. PADI have been out there all this week to look at how it can be used in training and development. There is much better veiwing area, with more windows, and the impresive tunnel bridge. You can even see the surface pool from the sun terrace. The cafe and waiting area is much bigger.
The management have imposed some rules, at the end of the day its thier pool. The main three rules are: 1. only qualified deep divers to the bottom (unless under instruction) 2. only qualified divers in small caves (again unless under instruction) 3. All dives to be no-decompression. Local laws: divers must complete a medical statement and have insurance to include deep diving.
As far as going to Italy.
Me and andy flew out on a Tueday morning, arriving in Venice about 9.30am. We then had a full day to explore Venice before going to our hotel in Padau. Wednesday we went to Y-40. No pressure of time, our first dive was about 10am, with a second dive at 1pm. We then had the rest of the day to relax and off gas. 20 minutes back to the hotel. Thursday we needed to be at the Airport by 9.30am, so again no rush.
So even though these trips are the same length as our Nemo trips, we had more time to enjoy. We got a day to sight see Venice. Nothing was a rush and was much more relaxing. Obvioulsly we did this as a midweek trip on this occasion.
I might organise a trip for later in the year

I love how you say "Nemo is just 34m" - JUST!!!
It looks like Italy has a number of advantages - how did costs compare though with 2x hotel rooms and flights? I always thought Nemo was a good value trip due to shared cars etc. But I haven't been to Venice

BTW, did I notice you diving Nitrox at the Italy pool (think only air is offered at Nemo if I remember correctly) ?

This facility would be too deep for Nitrox use, and wouldn't have any advantage. The tanks at Y-40 are all 15ltr compared to 12ltr at Nemo.
Based on our trip the costs would work out at about £280. This would include, air fares, day in Venice, Day at Y-40 with two dives, two nights in hotel and transport for getting around. So compared to Nemo at £150 it is obviously dearer. But the Y-40 trip is much more laid back, you get to see Venice. Relaxed day at the dive facility without time pressure and constraints.
These trips are not just about the diving - they offer a fun and social trip for everyone

Let me get this clear in my own mind. Mr J tolerates us on trips to go diving yet on most trips doesn't dive and wants to sleep. Mmmmmmm yes. It's clear now

Just remembered about this little bit of video.
Andy was right behind me at the end of dive. Look at my reaction when I turn round to see him missing and going the other way!
