Vancouver - Canada! Empty

Greetings all,
As some of you may know I have just returned from a fantastic 2 week holiday in Vancouver.
The main purpose of the trip was the World Police and Fire Games (www.2009wpfg.ca)

Due to my car crash in March, I was unable to compete at the games... however I had a fantastic time.
Team Great Britain did really well at the games winning numerous gold, silver and bronze medals!
I managed 2 days of diving, whale watching trips, a trip on the Rockies, and lots of good food and drink!

The diving in British Columbia was great!

On my first day of diving we got the ferry over to Vancouver Island, where we boarded a boat which took us out to Snake Island. At the foot of the Island are 2 WW2 ships, which were sunk by the Artificial Reef Society of BC around 10 years ago...

For both dives the surface currents were very strong and we had to use the guide rope on the side of the boat to get us to the shot line. Once on the shot line/decent the currents didn't seem that strong. The vis for the first 10 mins was quite poor at around 5m. When we got to around a depth of 20m the vis was great - at around 10-15m. - It was at 20m where out of the gloom the ships bow appeared - a real Titanic moment!!!

I was really worried about diving at depth, after my bad dive at stoney, but my buddy was great. My buddy was the chief instrustor from Langley Dive Center - Les! Les really looked after me and took everything at my speed. After a few minutes under the water - I had forgotten about all my worries and really enjoyed the dives!

HMCS Saskatchewan - max depth 33.9m, Bottom time 32 mins.
HMCS Cape Bretton - max depth 27.7m, Bottom time 30 mins.

The sea life on both ships was very simular... lots of star fish, sun stars, rock fish, ling cods, shrimps/prawns, muscles, sea slugs, corals, lions mane jelly fish and various anemies. Really enjoyed entering and exploring the wrecks.

On my second day of diving we did 2 shore dives from Whytecliffe Park, Vacouver.
Dive 1 - North side of the bay - max depth 18.9m, bottom time 29 mins.
Dive 2 - South side of the bay - max depth19.2m, bottom time 39 mins.

Unfortunatly the harbour seals did not find us for the dives... however we saw numerous kinds of fish (ling cod, rock fish, lemon sole), big crabs, hermit crabs, corals, and urchines.

For the first time I experienced really really strong currents, as we swam round the pinical of the bay, at 18m! It was that strong that we had to hook our selves on to the rocks and use the rocks to pull ourselves out of the strong current!
Water temps were ok at 10-13 degrees at the coldest.

Getting better at the photography too! ...
