Back in July I undertook the PADI DSAT Tech Deep Diver exams. Passed with flying colours. Which means I can teach this course.

What is it all about: The TEC deep diver course is split into three separate parts.
1. Introduction to twin set diving and configaration - requires 1 pool dive and 2 open water dives
2. Apprentice tech deep - allows you extend deep dives to 40m whith gas switching to 60% nitrox
3. Tech Deep Diver - alows you to extend dives with gas switching up 100% 50m max.

What this all boils down to is - more time deeper with less time on decompression. Great if you want to see a wreck at 40m! If you have seen the recent BBC series Pacific Abyss you know not everthing is at the surface!!!!

PostSubject: It's like this   DSAT Tech Deep Diver EmptyWed Sep 17, 2008 2:50 pm

Been there, done that, got the The Twinset. lol!

No seriously, I did my Tec deep a couple of years ago now, gosh i sound old.
It's a very rewarding course, but is quite a challenge.

First off it's not what a lot of people think, as it only qualifys you to 50m. Most people think Tec deep, great 70 -80m here we come. But it's about extending your time at deeper depths, it gos in to decompresion diving, which isnt for everyone. There are greater risks and responsibilitys to be considered. Due to the nature of the diving getting to the surface is not allways an option if something goes wrong. Its a deciscion not to be taken lightly.
Because of this there are now 2 parts to the Tec deep course, The tec deep apprentice, and the tec deep diver. And Padi have just added another course the introduction to twinset speciality.

The tec deep aprentice is the first part of the tec deep course, it is made up of Four practical aplications, and Seven training dives, using twinsets with manifolds for back gas, and two side mounts for gas switching.
This part of the course will qualify you to make No Decompresion dives to 40m using air or enriched air with up to 60% oxygen, using technical diving equipment and procedures.
The pre reqs-
Padi advanced open water diver
Padi enriched air diver
Padi deep diver
Have a minimum of 50 logged dives, of which 10 must be on enriched air, 12 must be deeper than 18m, and 6 must be deeper than 30m.
Minimum age is 18.

The Padi/dsat tec deep course, builds on the tec apprentice foundations, it has 8 Practical applications and 5 training dives.
Again using twinsets and side mounts but this time with up to 100% oxygen for decompresion. This course will quallify you to make gas switch extended no decompresion dives, Decompresion stop dives and accelerated decompresion dives using air, nitrox or up to 100% O2 to 50m.
The pre reqs in addition to those for the tec apprentice are-
Padi Rescue diver
Have a mimum of 100 loged dives to which 20 must be enriched air dives, 25 must be deeper than 18m,and 15 must be deeper than 30m.

Very Happy Very Happy
So thats what the course intail's, it normally takes arround 12 days to do but can be longer depending on a few things. There is quite a lot of Physics involved to do with gases and presure, ppo2 sac rates etc etc. You need to have your own tec deep diver manual.
As for the kit, i find it is alwalys best to have your own, but saying that you don't need to, as you can normally hire or borrow this.
It is worth considering having your own wing as this the main part of your setup. But it has to be capable of lifting quite heavy loads. And if you have never dived in a wing you need to try this first.
You will be using a minium of four clyinders, Twins and a couple of 7s or 10s side slung, so you will need more regs as each bottle needs it's own reg set.

For me kit is not a concern, as you can always borrow or hire for the duration of the course and then slowly add to your own at a latter date.

I got in to tec diving over a diner table, i asked " so what's invovled in this tec diving Lark then" The next day i was droped of the boat attached to a twinset, with a set of sideslings, straight down to 25m, mask off, doing shutdowns freeflows etc. So kinda thrown in at the deep end.
But ever since then i have never looked back,I can be the first off the boat down to 50m, stay there for 30mins and slowly rise back to the surface, while most other people on the boat, drop down to 50m stay 4mins then head up. If i am going down all that way i wana stay awhile!!!!

I didn't do my course with Smudge, as he hadn't passed his exams at that point, in fact i should take the credit for getting him back in to the tec diving. So i don't know how much he charges. In the uk we tend to use places like NDAC for the deeper dives along with stony cove for a lot of the training. Due to the nature of the diving you carn't always do more than one dive a day, so that's something else to consider.

Anyway i have rambled on enough now, for those of you considering this route i suggest the introdution to twinset, it gets you used to the kit we use, why we use it this way etc etc and gives you a good grounding into technical diving all the assoisated stuff.

Happy Diving Very Happy Very Happy
